2 Birthdays - And ...

My intention was to post a slightly different version of this last night, but we all know where good intentions lead us – or me anyway.

I had a job interview yesterday which took up way more time than I expected and put me off schedule for files that are due tomorrow morning.

When I got back from the interview I felt so deflated and overwhelmed that I immediately fell asleep.

I woke up at 4 AM and realized it was …

National Cotton Candy Day and …
Feast of St. Ambrose of Milan, patron of beekeepers.

oh yeah – and …
I’m another year older
and deeper in debt

53 years ago today– I was born a poor black child – NO WAIT, that’s Oprah – crap, that would have been a cool destiny.

OK – 53 years ago today- on a Wednesday (the day dedicated to being full of woe) - I was born in NY Hospital to Tom and Anne – their first child, my Nana’s first grandchild.

I was to be named Ava, after Nana, but my father refused and a long and heated battle ensued between my father and everyone else on the planet. As was her way my Mother finally threw up her hands in defeat and said – “fine, name her after that hurricane that flooded CT.”

And so it was …

Diane was the costliest hurricane in US history until it was surpassed by Hurricane Betsy in 1965, and was the sixth costliest U.S. hurricane of the 20th century.

The name Diane was later retired due to this storm, and will never again be used for an Atlantic hurricane.

At the last minute my Mom threw in the extra ‘N’ so that her name was part of my name and to endlessly annoy my Father who told her not to do it. I like that.

If you search historic events on December 7 you’ll be overwhelmed with Pearl Harbor.

The only cool historic fact I could find for December 7 was …

In 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

Remember the Constitution? That thing that Bush and Cheney pissed all over. It’s OK, it’ll be back.

1955 wasn’t a big year for events – other than hurricanes.

Eddie Fisher married Debbie Reynolds. That’s pretty cool since I love their daughter Carrie. The marriage was broken up by Elizabeth Taylor. For all you kids out there – think Brad and Jen and Angelina.

When Elizabeth’s husband died Eddie Fisher “ran to comfort her with his penis” – as Carrie says.

Ellen Burstyn was born on December 7 – I’ve always thought Ellen would be a fantastic person to age into. More so even than Helen Mirren who appears to have lost her mind.

Larry Bird was born on December 7. Now me and Larry are 2 very different people. One is a tall, pale Irish person who ran around with a lot of black guys. The other is Larry Bird.

Harry Chapin and Tom Waits were born on the 7th – incredible writers, poetics.

Madame Tussaud was born on the 7th – made a fortune out of wax. All the good careers are taken.

Oh and Jackie Gleason won the Emmy in 1955. I always loved Jackie – he was a working class schmuck with a sweet, sad face. And a very sexy fat man.

This was the cover of The New Yorker the week I was born.

That is the Rockefeller Center I remember.

My son surprised me by leaving little gifts and cards all over the house. He’s working double shifts so I haven’t seen him in days.

My DIL got me a cake.

Funny thing (to everyone except my son) – tomorrow is my DIL’s birthday AND Connie was the horrendous hurricane that preceded my hurricane. Prophetic?

So - lots of hoo-hah in the hood.

On Friday the blog will be 1 year old.

We’ll talk about that later.

And …

I’m going to be a GrandMa!! Yes indeed!

Oh baby – this baby is in for the ride of his/her life …

Granny has all kinds of fun up her sleeve …

And that’s the story …

I’m off to let myself eat cake.

You do indeed have a lot to celebrate! Happy, happy birthday granny-to-be!

Happy Birthday to you, Dianne! The year 1955 was special for two events that happened...that go without saying! I really enjoyed Ralph Kramden, he always got back up and tried again.

The most wonderful present you could have received is your impending grandchild. You will be a great guide to this child about life, caring and commitment. You will be so important and bigger than life to him/her. And I know that you will be happy, Congrats are in order, and be advised that 53 is not old, but a wise age to be.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! Woooo-hoooo!!

And *when* are you going to be a Grandma!?? You need one of those ticker things on your sidebar LOL!

PS. I remember that Constitution thing-y, too. I think most everyone would be happy if that would be implemented according to the intentions of the Founding Fathers. :] You betya.

PPS. Do they have names picked out? Is the nursery decorated? OK, I know you always answer everybody... and I have to go... but I will check back tomorrow to see what you say!!!

OOOOOOO... I'm so excited for you!! Please say you won't go *ugh* when they get 'round to having numbers four, five and six, though ok?? Please?

Hugs!

SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!

Do you crochet or knit??

OK, shutting up now.

BUT I'M SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!! OOOO!

Happy Birthday to YOU ;--)
Today would have been my Dad's 105th birthday ... so perhaps you're kindred spirits of some kind.
Hugs and blessings,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I was kind of on reading strike today and I almost missed this big news!

And your gonna be a grandma! Eureka! Wow! Way cool!

Funny about the two hurricanes. Maybe that can become a tradition. Strong women named after perilous hurricanes.

Anyway. Happy Birthday!

Hope you get the job (if you want it). If you just need it and don't want it, then I hope something better shows up.

queen size funny bone - that made me laugh - who knew cotton candy had a day! and why would it be in December!?

sylvia - it does seem to be an abundance of blessings, thank you :)

ralph - I think that's what I loved about Ralph Cramden - that endless resilience.
thank you for your very sweet words :)

mrs c - so tell me, are you excited!? lol
thank you for all that enthusiasm
the baby is due July 1 so there is plenty of time.
Mia was a favored girl's name for a long time, before Mia the cat came (she came with the name).
My son has a list of his favorite football players if it's a boy - or WHEN it's a boy as he puts it.
the guest room will become the nursery. I know my DIL has wallpaper and decor magazines forever. I bought her a bunch of books too - she loves to read. twins run in both families so that's also a big conversation point

reb - thanks :)
I think I'll do OK as Grandma except I want a cool name - maybe I'll have a 'come up with a good name for Granny' contest!!

kell- thanks!! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

happy - I love the idea of being a kindred spirit with your Dad. I am sure he was a wonderful soul - just look at his girl :)
thank you

raven - I'm glad you didn't miss the news but I would have e-mailed you. I'm so tired!! Must be my age and 'granniness' LOL
I haven't thought about the job since I left the interview - which did go well - because I'm not sure what I want. But I love your wishes for me - thanks!!

Dianne said...

jay - you were typing all those Happys while I was answering the others!! I thought I felt you there. Thanks - you're the best!!

WOW! Just plain "WOW" at all those things! First, hope it was a really Happy Day (I'm a little behind on my reading so I'm technically a day late with the greetings there.) Has it really been a whole year already that I've been communicating with you? Holy rip! Where does the time go anyway? And the Grandma thing? Well, trust me on this one, Dianne, but it is the absolute best, most incredible event life has to offer to mothers everywhere! It, like sex, is so great that if the Good Lord invented anything better, He kept it for Himself! When's the anticipated "due" date?
Again -congrats all the way around, for a blog well written, a life full of changes, surprise, sunshine about to get much fuller of all those things!
Peace.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DIANNE. Hi Hi Di !
You seem to be in good company, what with Ellen and Harry, and that wonderful New Yorker cover.

And congratulations on you blogiversary coming up. You haven't been blogging a whole lot longer than I have! That surprises me.

I hope you had a really great day (ankle and all) because you deserve it.

the walking man said...

So now that you're (temporarily) the same age as I, I can share some secrets of life with you...naaa, you're still too young to want to know.

Happy week kiddo.

Happy belated birthday! I hope you had a wonderful day and enjoyed your cake.

Congratulations on the impending grand child as well. Much to celebrate in your household despite life's ups and downs and that is cool.

Dianne, I'm not excited... *yawn*

LOL!

TWINS WOULD BE GREAT! My dad is a twin. Even my mom and aunt could not tell them apart easily, but I always could. My grandma made them dress alike until they were 14 (I kid you not). If one of them got dirty, they BOTH had to change. Even now, they will visit each other from ACROSS THE COUNTRY and find they have once again selected the same shirt from the same catalogue. :]

And look at all these other beautiful comments! Dianne, you are truly blessed.

(Would you mind telling the newly-pregnant couple "CONGRATS" from your internet friends? Tell them everyone's really happy for 'em.)

And I put my vote in for "Nana."

CG said...

Happy Birthday dear Dianne! I'm so thrilled you're going to be a granny - probably the coolest granny EVER?

At one pont I was going to be called Diane!

Dianne said...

farmer's wife - I like 'Gramma' - my son used to say 'Gamma' - he was terrible with 'Rs' - it's a Brooklyn thing lol
the ankle is better and I can even walk without the cane for short spells. I need PT and I probably need knee surgery but the insurance ... that's why I don't update much, it's such an annoying, depressing story. I love ya for asking!

ETK - you have a wonderful voice :)
and I bet Maddie and her posse sang along
thanks kid

ivanhoe - it will be so lovely to pass on all of the Nana'isms - she had a million of them and they were all so wonderful. thanks again :)

betty - thanks!!

pagan - thanks sweet lady. you will most certainly have your turn - it's funny - I was thinking about SG and her wife and how difficult their road is compared to my kids and that once again renewed my resolve. and made me certain, not that I really doubted, that our quest is a just and loving quest. I want everone's children to have what Jeffrey and Connie take for granted. Love you all :)
you can be 'Aunt Pagan' - I don't want to be the only Pagan in this kid's life ;)

jay - Jingle Bell Bashing? I'm assuming you blogged about that and I will find out when I visit the Salamander sisters. I am so off schedule these days.
I shall be 3rd in Gramma line. Yours, Mine, and then Me :)
much love to you and the furrry ones!

deborah - thanks dahlink!! Oy the stories I tell lol
I was especially proud of the Carrie Fisher quote and the Larry Bird line - I was channeling Craig Ferguson ;)

Matt-Man - I'll be rockin' the house til it's foreclosed LOL
I think storm tracking is hot!! Seriously, hurricanes are an amazing force of nature. My hurricane was one of the few to ever come so far up the east coast. It really messed with New England and caused historic floods in CT and poor PA. that's why it was still in the news in NY when I was born. And I love that my name was retired ;)
I love ya Matty

kerry - funny you should mention telling me that - I was thinking about that - and you - while I was writing. It meant a lot to me since I think you're such a great Mom.

Jeni - I vaguely remember sex LOL but yeah it's pretty cool
the due date is July 1. She wanted to be in her 3rd month before we told anyone. I'm telling you guys before most of my land locked friends since I actually like most of you more LOL
and thanks as always for being so supportive and for being one of my very first - the first? - readers. I have to go back to my first post and check that out
I hope to be half as dedicated a Gramma as you are Jeni

bobbie - it feels longer than a year to me too! and to think I wasn't going to do it, then I wasn't going to continue - I owe most of that original encouragement to my friend Cathy.
I worked all day yesterday but ya know, it didn't bother me since I am so grateful to have projects that will pay January's bills. So many are struggling. that job interview I went on had 3 times as many candidates as they expected and most of us were 'over-qualified'. I was talking to one woman who has been out of a job for so long and her savings are drying up. Makes me take pause.

mark - you share the secrets of life with me in everything you write!

bob-kat - I did enjoy the cake lol
and we're going to have more for my DIL !!!
and yes, regardless of the ups and downs there is much to be happy about

mrs C - I don't know if I want to share 'Nana' with the original 'Nana' - I have to think about that.
Twins - especially a boy and girl - would be the best!! On Thanksgiving when we were all together for the first time since the news the talk became so funny - my DIL kept reminding us that she didn't have any control over 'all the orders you're putting in' :)
I will absolutely tell them about all their blog-land well wishers :)

bear - I almost missed it by a day!! thanks bear :)

CG - I will defintely work on my coolness!! and a bit of mischief thrown in for good measure. How funny that we were almost both Diane :)

Happy Belated Birthday, Hurricane Dianne! I'm sure you get that a lot, but I had to laugh out loud when I read it. How a propos. I heard Malcolm Gladwell on CNN say that there were a disproportionate amount of smart, successful people born in 1955. Case in point, right?

A very hearty congratulations on becoming a granny-to-be! You are going to be awesome, that baby is already very lucky. I can't wait to follow you on your latest journey. Cheers!

cherie - Oh thank you! I adore Rosalind Russell and would love to be her.
I have been avoiding my e-mail because clients are upsetting me but I will go look as soon as all the coffee kicks in

Kudos on the first anniversary of Forks off the Moment! Hard to believe it’s only been a year!!
Congratulations on the great news from Jeffrey and Connie. You are going to rock as a grandma!!! And oh, the lucky wee one!!! I am celebrating with you, but can also sense your fatigue. My very best wishes for the work stuff to lighten for you. (Please ignore my email if it adds to your burden)

Holy layer cake Batman! Where do I begin? Happy friggin birthday. So you're 53 years young. Congrats!

Thanks for the little back story behind your birthday. I was named after one of the dead Kennedys (the first to be assassinated), so I share the sordid natures behind our names... I think.

And, congrats on becoming a grandma! But for your own sake, stay out of the baby naming process, okay? Heh.

granny annie - that's what I like to hear!! thanks

mrs c - I know - Nana called it 'passing the torch' - it's just such a one in a million name for me - but we'll see - plenty of time - plus I'd like to see what comes organically

gabrielle - you never add to a burden!! the blog e-mail is a different account from the work one - which is of course full at any given moment so I don't get to blog e-mail til at night or in the morn
I will check out the lullaby - :)
and yes - I am tired - but that's OK :)

hilary - plus we both have a Jeffrey!! that's a lot of connections lady, I like that :)

pete - an evil grin!! Me? but what could you mean.
my son mentioned - only half joking - that he hoped I never told his children half the crap he pulled on me
hehehehehehe

of course with the baby when we're alone I'll just tell the kid the real deal - hehehehehehe

The babe is very lucky having such a cool granny! Both my grandmothers died when I was very young (one when I was a baby, the other when I was 7 or 8) so I feel like I missed out a bit. Unfortunately I'm rather too old to ask for you to be my surrogate grandma - I think I would have loved a gran like you! :)

Dear Dianne,
Happy belated birthday December 7th.
Mine was December 8th.
Funny thing is that Pearl Harbor in Norwegian history books happened on December 8th.
Must have something with time difference or date line to do.
Anyway one year older..is not so bad the alternative considered.
I am a firm believer in the fact; the older you become the wiser you get. Dylan, I think.

knight - you are in the circle and have had 'aunti-ness' bestowed upon you :)

snoop - thank you!! I hope to be as good as Nana as you are a Mom

travis - thanks buddy :)

askew - he just kept alluding to how 'over qualified' I was and to my 'vast amount of experience' - that usually means 'you're too old and we don't want you'
plus there was a 20-something woman - knockout gorgeous in the waiting room and he practically fell over himself holding the door for her - me - well it literally hit me in the ass as I was leaving LOL

mark - I wanted to post about that but don't know if I'll have time - I hope it makes an impact

micky - thanks so much!!
