I See ...

... no, not dead people, although they do speak to me.

I pulled over to make a phone call and as I waited for the call to connect I glanced over at the field to my right and saw a bird sitting on the grass. He seemed to be in a frozen pose and I tried to follow his line of vision to figure out what he might be watching. He never moved.

Wounded and lost and homeless animals always find me. I have stopped traffic to gather up a family of bunnies and return them to the woods. I have climbed fences to set traps for feral cats. I once spent the night outside the gates to an auto repair shop until animal rescue arrived because the dog inside was clearly neglected.

These escapades were a whole lot easier before the cane and ankle brace.

So I had a sense of dread as I watched the motionless bird. What should I do? Get a box? A blanket? Call someone?

Maybe if I got a closer look. It was a tricky road to cross but I ventured forth and as I got closer ...

... it was a piece of bark.

I thought I saw a birdie! I did! I did!

I feel silly when I look at the photo. It is clearly not a bird.

It is an alligator.

LOL, LOL....It sounds exactly like something I would do and/or see....In fact I have! I will focus on something and think it is one thing---usually a living creature of some sort---And then as I hone in---I see quite clearly it is 'bark' or an optical illusion that turns out to be nothing.....It's like the movie "BLOW-UP? Did you ever see that? It is WONDERFUL....It is about a photographer---in the
1960's----who see's something with his camera and keeps blowing the picture up closer and closer----It's a terrific film! Dabid Hemmings and Vanessa Reefrave in this fascinating Michaelangelo Antonioni film...read about it here:

If it makes you feel any better, I think that it looks like a bird in the picture on your blog page. When I click on to the bigger one, I can see that it's not. The brain is a funny thing, making a person see something familiar when it doesn't have enough information to make a determination. Heck, most of the time it's right. :)

Bwhahahahaahahahaha! OMG, Dianne, when I read that I HOWLED! How funny!

But I have to say, it DOES look like a bird!

"Wounded and lost and homeless animals always find me."

That's because you're a LOVE.

(((( Dianne ))))

Have a great Sunday, dear lady!

X to you and the gang!

My husband applies the brakes and puts us in peril to save...not living creatures but commodities. He has very sharp eyes and the last thing we were practically killed over was a perfectly good pocket knife in the middle of the road. I do the strangest thing when I'm driving a car....I KEEP MY EYE ON THE ROAD!!!

Oh, jeez! Then it's not just me that sees "things" !! Oh the perfect post for me this morning! I've been banging my head against the wall at some of the friggin' old lady stuff I've been seeing, saying, doing lately! Thanks, Dianne, my day is off to a much better start!! Oh, don't forget to have a fun day!!

That's obviously left over from some dog. No not that. Some bark.

I need to visit the eye doctor. It looks like a bird to me.

I can see why you thought it was a bird from a distance. :)

Kinda' looks like a bird. A speckled bird.
But I'm glad you didn't have to traipse out into the field to rescue it.

Oh Dianne, you are a love. You do my heart good and you make me laugh. But it's just as well that you were barking up the wrong tree. ;)

Oh stop! You don't have alligators up there. We have alligators here. Right in our ponds in Stone Creek!

Funny story. But I gotta give you credit for caring enough to get out of your car and try to help that bird aka piece of bark!

Thanks for the nice comment re my name. I've never much liked it, though. Never sounded "manly" enough. But then I wouldn't want to be called "Dick," either! :-)

Sounds like something I would see and do. You'd feel worse if you hadn't stopped, most likely.
I'm surprised you didn't get more comments about the "bark" being a dog. An itty bitty teeny-tiny puppy who needed rescuing.
See? Aren't you glad you stopped? I'm glad you did.

Heh!

That's like the pictures of the Lochness Monster that are nothing more than a toy submarine and a half-submerged log. :-)

Looks like a bird to me, too. LOL

Well clearly it is indeed an alligator and if you feel compelled to go out and rescue a wounded alligator that's clearly your prerogative but then I get the feeling that your next blog post would be from the hospital!

DJan said...

Such a funny story. Both parts, the one about your rescuing bunnies and the barking bird. I'm actually glad it wasn't a bird because then what would you have done? Rescuing a bird is not quite the same thing; you have to catch the poor creature.

But the story has a happy ending: this post! :-)

Ha! You didn't just leave that poor, lonely piece of bark lying there did you? hehe ;-)

LOL! Well, bark needs to be rescued sometimes, too. :) It really does look like an alligator from the photo. Would you have rescued it if that's what it had turned out to be?

Ellen Whyte said...

MOL, you clearly need a seeing eye dog!

I think it looks like a bird. I often have to look twice at things though.

LOL - it's definitely a shark.

I do this all the time - leaves become swooping hawks!

Been there and done that with both birds and snakes! Congrats on your POtW. Very funny.

Have to admit I saw a bird there, too till you fessed up and told me it was really an alligator. Must get my glasses checked. Will, once I stop laughing.

Marg said...

Well I would have done the very same things. In fact last night, I thought I saw a cat under one of the trees and it was the tree trunk. You just never know. That could have been an alligator. Have a great day.

TexWisGirl said...

too funny! i have so been there - rescuing things off roads and fields. and feeling silly when it's a lump of dirt instead of a wounded animal. :)

congrats on your POTW!

Hahahahahahaha!!!!! It sure looks like a bird to me...
Thanks for the laughs, and congratulations on your POTW!!!

Well you get the bird-saver award even if it was bark - at least you tried to save it! My mother was like you - as I child, I was mortified because she would even "save" dead animals - she didn't want them run-over more. Now, (in retrospect) I am able to appreciate her kindness and concern. Congrats on POTW!

A kindred animal lover! God bless you, and I'm hoping that if it was an injured alligator[!!] that you would have let someone else rescue it!!

Funny! I could see that happening to me -- I'm always spotting 'never mind' birds. (Look it's a ....oh never mind it's a plastic bag....)...

One time a ranger in the redwoods NP told us that a lady recently had thought that the red peeled bark at the side of the road was a dead Irish ssetter. She came in to the Ranger Station crying.

Oh I love you Dianne...do what I do. I carry disposable gloves, a paper bag with a chip clip and a small box in the car for anything that needs help. The gloves will also work for humans that are in trouble....
