I pulled over to make a phone call and as I waited for the call to connect I glanced over at the field to my right and saw a bird sitting on the grass. He seemed to be in a frozen pose and I tried to follow his line of vision to figure out what he might be watching. He never moved.
Wounded and lost and homeless animals always find me. I have stopped traffic to gather up a family of bunnies and return them to the woods. I have climbed fences to set traps for feral cats. I once spent the night outside the gates to an auto repair shop until animal rescue arrived because the dog inside was clearly neglected.
These escapades were a whole lot easier before the cane and ankle brace.
So I had a sense of dread as I watched the motionless bird. What should I do? Get a box? A blanket? Call someone?
Maybe if I got a closer look. It was a tricky road to cross but I ventured forth and as I got closer ...
... it was a piece of bark.
I thought I saw a birdie! I did! I did!
I feel silly when I look at the photo. It is clearly not a bird.
It is an alligator.

LOL, LOL....It sounds exactly like something I would do and/or see....In fact I have! I will focus on something and think it is one thing---usually a living creature of some sort---And then as I hone in---I see quite clearly it is 'bark' or an optical illusion that turns out to be nothing.....It's like the movie "BLOW-UP? Did you ever see that? It is WONDERFUL....It is about a photographer---in the

If it makes you feel any better, I think that it looks like a bird in the picture on your blog page. When I click on to the bigger one, I can see that it's not. The brain is a funny thing, making a person see something familiar when it doesn't have enough information to make a determination. Heck, most of the time it's right. :)

My husband applies the brakes and puts us in peril to save...not living creatures but commodities. He has very sharp eyes and the last thing we were practically killed over was a perfectly good pocket knife in the middle of the road. I do the strangest thing when I'm driving a car....I KEEP MY EYE ON THE ROAD!!!

Sounds like something I would see and do. You'd feel worse if you hadn't stopped, most likely.
I'm surprised you didn't get more comments about the "bark" being a dog. An itty bitty teeny-tiny puppy who needed rescuing.

Well clearly it is indeed an alligator and if you feel compelled to go out and rescue a wounded alligator that's clearly your prerogative but then I get the feeling that your next blog post would be from the hospital!
Such a funny story. Both parts, the one about your rescuing bunnies and the barking bird. I'm actually glad it wasn't a bird because then what would you have done? Rescuing a bird is not quite the same thing; you have to catch the poor creature.
But the story has a happy ending: this post! :-)

Well I would have done the very same things. In fact last night, I thought I saw a cat under one of the trees and it was the tree trunk. You just never know. That could have been an alligator. Have a great day.

Well you get the bird-saver award even if it was bark - at least you tried to save it! My mother was like you - as I child, I was mortified because she would even "save" dead animals - she didn't want them run-over more. Now, (in retrospect) I am able to appreciate her kindness and concern. Congrats on POTW!

Funny! I could see that happening to me -- I'm always spotting 'never mind' birds. (Look it's a ....oh never mind it's a plastic bag....)...
One time a ranger in the redwoods NP told us that a lady recently had thought that the red peeled bark at the side of the road was a dead Irish ssetter. She came in to the Ranger Station crying.
Oh I love you Dianne...do what I do. I carry disposable gloves, a paper bag with a chip clip and a small box in the car for anything that needs help. The gloves will also work for humans that are in trouble....
