Service Dogs

I've always loved dogs and I've always known how they - and animals in general - add so much to our lives.

After the horror in Newtown, CT I started following a group of service dogs on Facebook. I saw them on CNN and fell in love with them.

They are from Lutheran Charities Comfort Dogs Program

This is Isiah, as you can see he's in training.

I also discovered  Warrior Canine Connection  a group in Maryland who train dogs to become companions for soldiers returning from war with physical and physiological challenges.

Right now a group of 5 puppies, born on December 28th, 2012, are being trained.

You can catch their antics on the  Nursery Cam

As I've said before, animals are some of the best people I know.

I hope the VA and Congress release more funding for service dogs and that healthcare institutions recognize their value. Right now just about all the costs for service dogs are funded privately.

How precious!

Labrador's have the sweetest faces, don't they?

Loved the CAM!

"and animals in general - add so much to our lives."

You said it, Dianne!

X to you, Hope, Siren and Isadora!

Oh aren't they beautiful - Isaiah is very handsome! Therapy dogs are such a great service, they're becoming more common over here and work in hospitals and prisons amongst other places.

On a related note, have you come across the kitten cam? There's a guy in the US somewhere who fosters kittens (and their mum) prior to them being rehomed, and he has a webcam to watch them grow. The current lot are all named after characters from the Alien films: http://new.livestream.com/FosterKittenCam/RipleysKittens

Dogs are good people.

I went to the cam, but they are sleeping. Probably worn out from all that playing. I'll be back! Thanks for the links! :-)

Dogs so easily bond with people, they make loyal companions.

Back when she could walk my sister used to take her dog to nursing homes to visit people and let them pet him. It brightened their day. When she was in the hospital following her accident I got permission to bring her dog down to visit her. He had never been to a hospital before (and this was a large one) but he walked right to the elevator and pulled me down the hall to her room where he proceeded to climb up on her bed with her. Dogs are healers.

Animals can bring such comfort to people. This is a fine organization and does much good in today's society.

They're so disgustingly cute that they should be illegal! Heh... I'm all for service animals. I know they have a job to do, so when I see them I don't ask to pet them...but it's hard to resist! :-)

PS
I love the little babies, too. I've known and loved several litters of pups, and I just love that baby-puppy smell, all warmth and softness and sweetness.

I love dogs, puppies especially. I think that service dogs are the greatest of things and am glad to hear about these organizations.

These are the best. We had a Golden - lost her a year and a half ago ... our hearts are still broken. She was truly a member of the family and the sweetest animal/person in the world (from our point of view).

Unfortunately, your wish for more government funding is unlikely to happen when we can't even get funding to care for human beings! :((

Hope all is well up in NJ!

I once volunteered for a group in Tulsa called TheraPETics Service Dogs of Oklahoma. I did not foster any puppies because of not being able to give them up once they qualified for the program but I did help raise money for the organization. Those dogs are simply amazing and not only serving their adopted owners day-to-day needs, but just providing loving therapy.

it's a great idea. Cats too, esp if you have a really soft kitty that adores cuddles. Mine aren't into strangers but we know a few who would be purrrfect!

Such a worthy endeavor and these little guys are just so cute. I'm afraid to check out the cam. I'd be watching all day.
