While I Ignore Rick Warren ...

While Rick Warren is raising his tainted voice in prayer today I wanted to send out into the global air other voices.

These quotes come from quotegarden.com

The photo is from The NY Times

Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands? ~Ernest Gaines

Who would give a law to lovers? Love is unto itself a higher law. ~Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy, A.D. 524

No government has the right to tell its citizens when or whom to love. The only queer people are those who don't love anybody. ~Rita Mae Brown, speech, 28 August 1982

You could move. ~Abigail Van Buren, "Dear Abby," in response to a reader who complained that a gay couple was moving in across the street and wanted to know what he could do to improve the quality of the neighborhood

War. Rape. Murder. Poverty. Equal rights for gays. Guess which one the Southern Baptist Convention is protesting? ~The Value of Families

The important thing is not the object of love, but the emotion itself. ~Gore Vidal

If Michelangelo had been straight, the Sistine Chapel would have been wallpapered. ~Robin Tyler

The Lord is my Shepherd and he knows I'm gay. ~Troy Perry

God has given you one face, and you make yourself another. ~William Shakespeare

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. ~Dr. Seuss

To know what you prefer, instead of humbly saying "Amen" to what the world tells you you ought to prefer, is to keep your soul alive. ~Robert Louis Stevenson

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. ~Friedrich Nietzsche

Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood.
Coretta Scott King

I believe all Americans who believe in freedom, tolerance and human rights have a responsibility to oppose bigotry and prejudice based on sexual orientation.
Coretta Scott King

And this last one is from Rick Warren …

We're a nation of laws, but the good thing about America, is that laws reside in the people and people can change the laws.

We’re working on it Rick, thanks for the encouragement.

It is all about to begin....!
Bless Us All!

I've just been watching your new President being sworn in :) Hope at last, not just for the US but those of us outside your shores who care about global issues.

I loved these quotes. Some spoke more to me than others (Nietzsche and Dr Seuss in particular) and I adored the response from Dr Abby :D Homophobia is not rife in the UK but it still lurks under the surface in places. So sad that people are scared of someone else's love :(

bobbie said...

Why are some people so afraid of those who are not carbon copies of themselves? Well, our new President ( OUR NEW PRESIDENT !! Yea!) said in his inauguration speech "We have chosen HOPE over fear." Do you think maybe we can convince them? We can sure try.

Your quotes are wonderful. I agree with Bob-kat absolutely about the two favorites - Nietzsche and Seuss.

I have to tell you, I was pretty teary from 12:05 until about 12:45 myself. In fact, it started earlier than that.

Perfect.

Thank you.

We watched, all of us here at the office, on the conference room BIG screen TV .. and when Rev Warren cited all the people of this nation #1 Boss called out to the TV:

'And Gays!'

And we all applauded.

old old lady of the hills - thank you - :)

bob-kat - I am so glad you're sharing this with all of us here :)
the Dr. Seuss quote is one of my all time favorites

bobbie - I got really chocked up when they showed him walking through the halls at the Capitol before they announced him - all by himself - it just filled me with hope and love for him.

kay - you're welcome :)

daryl - Yay!! for #1 Boss.
I was going to mute the asshat but I was actually on the phone with a client and couldn't reach the remote! guess God was messing with me
Every word out of his mouth is creepy. His tone is so fake and exaggerated. And when he asked God to hold the Obama family and he listed their names it sounded like something at a funeral. The guy is just simply a freak and I don't care anymore that he was there since he came off as so creepy and disgusting.

Dianne said...

bond - the fast food of religion ;)
no matter how much of that crap you shove down your throat it ain't nourishing and it will eventually come back to hurt you ;)
Hey! Rick Warren and Ronald McDonald - lovers perhaps?

Great post as always! I too ignored Warren. Other than this, the day has been fantastic!

Jay said...

Lowery owned Warren today. His closing prayer absolutely make Warren look like the hack that he is.

Dianne said...

Diane - it has been fantastic! I'm watching and recording so I can watch again lol
Cheers Lady!!

Jay - I agree! So distinguished and well spoken as opposed to Warren - who looked and sounded like some kind of crazy cartoon character

Sexual orientation discrimination is one of the last great social barriers, along with class distinction/poverty, and these, too, will fall, and soon. We're waking up!

pink dogwood said...

great quotes - I love the dear Aby one :)

Sylvia K said...

Hopefully we can move past these last social barriers quickly because I, too, believe we are slowly but surely waking up -- so it probably won't be as quickly as most of us would like to see it happen.

I love this quote.

Gene Robinson also gave an inaugural blessing. Did anyone hear it?

Touche....and very well done, as usual.

I said the same thing as Daryl's boss...only I didn't shout I included it as I prayed with Warren. God heard all of us.

In retrospect I have to say it was good to "slip" one in on Warrens prayer.

Dianne said...

cheesy - now did you ever think you'd utter that sentence! Abby really surprised me :)

raven - you're back!! Yay!!!!!

gabrielle - I love the quote too. I waited for Lowery's blessing.

quiet rage - thanks ;)
I thought the air needed a bit of cleansing

mark - I'm no expert on prayer but nothing that comes out of Warren's mouth sounds like a prayer to me.

maithri - I don't think Washington can handle me although I'd like to think the President would find me amusing
hehehehehehehe
hugs sweet doctor

deb - that has always been one of my most favorite quotes!

gabrielle said...

Ah, Lowery's blessing was the highlight for me

Dianne said...

gabrielle - and the interviews with him later set off another stream of tears - as he spoke of firehoses and dogs and being with Martin ...

My brother - the only sibling I actually call my sibling - is gay. I love him beyond love - without questioning - and will forever.

After 30 long years of being alone he finally found someone. I love him too.

In Alberta it is legal for gays to marry. I hope they ask me to be the old maid of honor.....

One writer yesterday quoted the head of a seminary who said "Warren prayed as open a prayer as a conservative Christian could possibly have prayed."

He did Dianne, all ideologies of Christianity, Muslim etc have to have voice at the table.

Did you notice when O went through his litany of inclusion...he said: Christian, Muslim, Hindu and non-believers but left out Buddhists?

My DIL is Buddhist. Should she be offended at not having been included? No because he made his point same as Warren did. It was a prayer and the intent behind it is what God looks at not the words. While I wouldn't be caught in any other condition than dead inside his church...he did OK.

Dianne said...

cloudia - Obama included more people than I have ever heard a President utter! it's a good start :)

aims - you'd be the wonderful maid of honor!! old maid is only a card game :)

mark - I understand the need for inclusion, truly I do and I don't want to be a left wing asshole but I am sick of hate and prejudice being wrapped up in a God and therefore it's OK. Warren has compared gay people to child molestors. If a "preacher" was up there who had compared black people to ciminals - wait - he wouldn't be up there. Obama saw fit to forsake Wright for a passionate speech where he spoke the truth about how descendants of slaves feel yet he extended a hand to someone whose speech is far more hateful and far less truthful. I understand why he felt he had to and I have come to peace with it for now but as someone whose beloved uncle killed himself with drugs and booze because of not being able to be himself in a family full of "good Christians" Warren and people like him will never have a moment's peace from me. I doubted I would see us come this far in my lifetime but now that we have we must go even further and giant lumps of crap like Warren need to get the fuck out of the way.

Great quote selection, Dianne. The last one especially because I believe Rick Warren spoke it with a conviction that he will continue to support legislation like Proposition 8 and other such attempts to stifle love between two people. That's where Pastor Rick is at, which makes the rest of his invocation a facade.

Dianne said...

spartacus - exactly! a facade that we must all point at and punch holes in - every single chance we get. Warren can go back to Saddlebrook or Babblebrook or Brokeback - whatever the name of his business church is - and spout whatever he wants - his right. But when he enters the national/global stage then it is my right, hell - my duty to respond.

the walking man said...

Dianne...I agree it is time to give the far right some marginalization in government decision making. But then I think it is time to get all religious dialog out of secular decisions.

Dianne said...

Mark - "But then I think it is time to get all religious dialog out of secular decisions."
Amen! :)

Travis Cody said...

I still wonder why I, a non-religious individual, had to be subjected to a prayer before the secular swearing in of our 44th President.

I appreciate his personal choice to swear his oath on a bible and to add the words "so help me God" to the end of the oath in accordance with his faith. But I still find the public prayer disturbing. It seems incongruous with some of his words about unity.

CG said...

Fabulous and inspiring quotes.

Dianne said...

travis - I agree!! but could you imagine the stink that would have been made!!!!
what a distraction
the freakin' religious loons and right wing talking heads are going nuts over the fact that he recognized "non believers"

CG - thanks :)
anything to drown out that Warren trash
