I have always been a Sean Penn fan and I fully recognize that he can be a royal ass at times but I feel his intentions are always true, from his heart. And last night - he was perfect.

I agree that Dustin Black's speech was very moving.
I don't disagree with WHAT Penn said. I just can't stand the guy.
He had a date with Jewel and Clint Eastwood liked working with him, so he can't be a bad guy.
As soon as I saw your posting title I knew waht your two favorite moments would be, and of course I was right. that's because you are not afraid to reveal yourself to perfect strangers when it comes to causes you believe in.

I agree with you - It brought tears to my eyes when I was watching it.
We tuned in late, but we did catch both speeches. I thought the statements were tastefully made in a setting infamous for statements.
My favorite moment was the Humanitarian Award presented to Jerry Lewis, who is a personal hero of mine for his work in support of MDA.

travis - so many people thought Lewis would make a much longer speech - I wonder if his health held him back - that was very brief for him

Those were both very touching moments. In spite of not being able to stand Penn, I think I may have to see the movie.
The stupid station I was watching cut out just as Loren was about to speak (for one of those obnoxious cartoon programs) by the time they got back, she was done...I was appalled to say the least... everyone knows they run overtime.

There was some award show on...must have missed it.
The first youtube would not play but I take your word for it that it was touching. And the second one was fantastic--and elegant president and equal rights for all--right on!!!

These adult moments balanced out the two tacky juvenile camera pans to Brad/Angelina while Jennifer Anniston was presenting ...
Both were wonderful moments indeed. That first video is not playing at the moment but I found another site where that speech appears.
As for Jerry Lewis, I'm not a bit fan of the man. We had a good chuckle over "My humility is staggering!"
I enjoyed the whole Oscar show. I think Hugh was awesome - one of the best hosts!
Too bad I had to go to bed already at 10:30 :( and could not watch the ending.

daryl - there was a post show that analyzed all their body language and dissected the moments - unreal stupidity
hilary - I'm not a Lewis fan either - he has said more than one person's share of hateful things and I never liked the way he drags the children around the stage - recently it came out how he speaks of the disabled behind closed doors
ivanhoe - I really enjoyed Hugh's hosting, I agree - he did a great job
Because I don't see many movies at all these days (and because life is just plain BUSY right now) I missed the show ... so thanks for sharing ... I appreciate the links too ;--)

Sorry to be late on this. I had to call it an early night last night, which included being unable to watch the entire program. I'm so glad you posted this. I was going to go look for it but I didn't even have to.
Milk was a great film; and also Slum Dog Millionaire. The other nominee I saw was Benjamin Button, which I thought was truly terrible. A star-studded piece of crap.
I didn't watch the awards but did catch a clip of Penn...it was perfect...made me like him. Some of us with smart mouths are always in trouble, hey man...somebody has to say it! lolol
I found these two moments to be highlights as well. I was especially impressed with Sean Penn, not only with his impassioned speech but a willingness to laugh at himself when he seems so serious all the time.

Dianne, thanks for putting up the Sean Penn video. I missed his acceptance speech (but I was ROOTING for him) I've alway thought he was a consummate actor. "Milk" was an extraordinary fil BTW the way, the other video has been removed!
I so agree, my dear Dianne.....Iloved both those speeches more than almost anything and was deeply moved by both of threse men. The day before Lance Black won for Best Screenplay at Film Indepedent Spirit Awards...These Awards are 'no holds'bard(?)"....people can say anything they want for as long as they want...And as the Title says---ALL the pictures and actors and writers, etc..Are all up for Independant Films.....
And incidentally, Mickey Roarke won the Spirit Award and spoke for about 8 or 9 minutes...IT WAS GREAT!
I also loved that Sean Penn mentioned Micket Roarke in such a loving way....That was true Generosity Of Spirit!

I have to admit it- I can't help it, I have always had a soft spot for Sean. He was quite a pubk, and he can be an ass, but he is an incredible actor and does indeed have heart! Excellent vids!
Hollywood is always at the forefront promoting civil rights for all. I did see Slumdog (woderful) and now I HAVE to see Milk. Good job as always my friend!
