Cat Burglar

This is Dusty ...

This is Dusty's mug shot - kind of, sorta

In the past three years Dusty has wandered his neighborhood at night collecting everything from small toys to pajamas and bringing his collectibles back to his humans. He has gathered over 600 objects.

You can read about Dusty in this article from USA Today

And you can see his appearance on Letterman

That's where I first heard of Dusty.

Cats are gatherers and they bring what they discover back to those they love so clearly Dusty is happy at home. The neighbors have gotten accustomed to his behavior and if something is missing they know where to look - Dusty's yard.

Although this is a fun story and Dusty is adorable I just need to mention that I take issue with allowing domesticated cats to wander from home. I don't think it's safe for them. Letterman shared this opinion with Dusty's people - they say he gets out through the dog door. Dave suggested sealing the dog door. I love Dave.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Oh, what a sweet face Dusty has!

He looks part Siamese.

I agree with you Dianne, it's not safe, both my cats were home cats.

Meow!

Have a great weekend, dear lady!

X to you and the gang!

I agree with you Dianne, cats shouldn't be allowed to roam.

Dusty really is a cat thief - how funny!
Our cats have never been allowed to roam though occasionally they have escaped, but never for long.

I am in full agreement! I trained my cat from when he was just a kitten to wear a harness outside and be on a lead or walk on a leash. There are too many sick people out there that like to harm animals to let them roam by themselves.

Saw this on Letterman. Funny.

I didn't know cats did that. I have had many of them over the years, both indoor and outdoor cats. I am now feeding the wild birds and don't like cats to catch and torment them! So I am with you about keeping them inside or trained on a leash.

What a funny and adorable critter.

I can't say that I totally agree with you about cats wandering. They're our pets and we certainly want to protect them but they're also predatory creatures by nature and there are some that just aren't happy unless they're outside doing what cats do. For some it's a matter of happiness vs. safety.

But I do understand where you're coming from and all that having been said, I have only ever had indoor cats. One of my guys likes to get outside, and he makes a beeline for the door every time in mild, dry weather. I stay out with him and bring him back inside when he gets too adventurous and he's content with that. But if he was completely miserable being an indoor creature, I think I'd have to let him be a cat. I would hate that though.

Our cat loves the outdoors...if we tried to keep him in he would destroy the house...

good weekend dear

Dusty is darling -- I worry about his safety though.

Well, I don't believe any animal should be kept indoors all the time. Not even people. We are part of nature and must interact with it. I do try to keep my pets in at night though. Currently I have only one cat.

It depends on where you live and how far your kitty roams. The US sounds pretty unsafe to us - for everyone, furry and non-furry. All those guns! We hope you're feeling better and have that paperwork problem solved.

Too funny! At least the neighbors know where to find their missing items. I too agree that housecats should be kept inside.

I agree with you and Dave. And I LOVE Dave, too....! I think it is his Humaness that really appeals to me---a flawed person, like us all, who shows us who he is. And I also love Dave because he saw the brilliance of Craig!

I'm thinking of getting a house cat. Thanks for bringing me this story of Dusty.

Excessive wandering is why Moxy is confined to our home while the other cats get to enjoy the great outdoors. I wish she could too, but we just can't trust her to remain close and safe.

My cat[s] have always been indoor cats...I used to have 2 and now 1.
I agree with ya!
