Isn't It Ironic

Shortly after the invasion of Iraq, when it first began going badly for the US and other allied troops, I remember the few and far between questions being asked.

Why were we there?
Where were the weapons of mass destruction?
Did Iraq really have anything to do with the attacks of 9/11?

The right, especially Fox News and it's merry cast of brainless talking heads, went ballistic.

How can we question our President that way? Where was our sense of patriotic respect during a time of war?

We were all terrorist loving, God hating, country destroying liberals just being negative and nonsensical as usual.

After all, even if Hussein wound up having no weapons and not being part of 9/11, he tortured and killed his own people and was an overall evil lunatic.

Fast forward to this week.

After weeks of news coverage of protesters and innocent bystanders being shot and bombed.
After dozens of Gadhafi's proclamations assuring the world that he would destroy any resistance.

The Republicans and their ilk manage to have the audacity to say ...

House Speaker John Boehner said that the Obama administration "has a responsibility to define for the American people, the Congress and our troops what the mission in Libya is" and how it will be accomplished.

Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, the Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said Obama needs to tell the American public "to what extent military force will be used and for how long."

These snippets came off the AP feed and have been posted on numerous news and political sites.

This criticism aimed at a President who has had more press conferences the first three months of this year than Bush had his entire presidency.
Not to mention a Vice President (ya gotta love Joe) who couldn't keep his mouth shut if his train schedule depended on it in comparison to a torture loving megalomaniac who enjoys shooting his friends in the face.

I think the situation in Libya is complex. I hate the use of force by the US and have conflicting thoughts about what needs to be done.

One thing I do know is that the memory impaired Republicans are, once again, pointing their dirt encrusted fingers.

The hypocrisy is enough to make you cry.

Great post. I agree with everthing you said. I've been walking around the house going "What is going on, this is crazy." Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Unbelievable it is. Did you know President Obama was totally responsible for the recession and anything that happened in the 8 years before he took office. Yup, on the way out W tapped him and said "you're it, no touch-backs" and that is all it took

At least our gov't knows how to get people out of places like that in a hurry. My cousin was in Egypt and was not impressed at the lack of assistance getting out and we have been hearing the same story in Libya and Japan.

As for Libya, I don't know what the answer is. But, can we in the rest of the world shrug our shoulders and say it is their own problem. I think not.

And since it was Hillary who convinced Obama to go along with the military action and no-fly zone, the right wing blogs are out with their "He can't stand up to his female subordinates" and "Got 'nagged' into going along with all this."

Here, Here Sister...I don't know what any of the answers are. It's so frustrating. It seems like everyone expects the good ol' US of A to come in and rescue everyone well, who rescues us?
UGH!!!
and thank you for putting words to my frustrations...

Great post! You echo many of my own thoughts. I am especially sick of hearing liberal men and conservative men go on and on about how the women are really in charge and nothing good can come from that. Sexist fucktards all of them!

The hypocrisy certainly stinks. The problem I DO have with the Libya action, though is this (a) Who are the 'allies' backing? What do we know about the opposition? Will they be any better than Libya's current dictatorship? (b) Will we soon be dropping bombs on Saudi Arabia if it all kicks off there? Doubt it, after all we don't seem to be in any hurry to 'police' Bahrain. (c) Isn't Ghadaffi using weapons supplied by Britain and the US? Yes, I believe he is. (d) Isn't this the same Ghadaffi who was Tony Blair's mate only a short while ago?

Seems to me that you cannot believe ANYTHING that our politicians say or do, so why should we assume they are acting honourably now? Are they going to invade the Congo or Zimbabwe next in order to bring the people there democracy? We know they won't. Just like they won't be attacking China or North Korea any time soon. Yes, hypocrisy, certainly but they are ALL hypocrites...Bush (1 and 2), Blair, Obama, Cameron. They make me sick. Load them all into a cart along with Ghadaffi, the Sauds, Bin Laden and anyone else who wants to bring pain to this world and send them off where they belong.

Sadly, much as we might wish otherwise, we have no choice but to lay a heavy hand on Gaddafi, the President of a country that harbours terrorists, that welcomed back with open arms the Lockerbie bomber. It is a just intervention - let's hope it doesn't become another war.

Right on, sister! I cannot even watch the news these days, it's so hard to keep a positive outlook these days. No matter what he does, or doesn't do, it would be wrong in the eyes of the Republicans. I can't stand the hypocrisy. You said it very well.

All I hear from the right and the left is second guessing, about Libya, and about everything else President Obama does.

President Obama is a man of moderation. In this political culture of ours, where everyone is supposed to take sides, he's just to difficult for extremists to figure out.

I wish the "experts" in the media were half as smart as they think they are.

My only question here is this: "Did House Speaker Boehner cry when he made his little speech?" Betcha he was able to control those obnoxious tears when he put this little blurb out, wasn't he? But man, he sure can sob and blubber over all kinds of ridiculous crapola, can't he?

Ya know what? I thought the invasion of Iraq was stupid under Old George Bush (way back in the day, whippersnapper) and protested it then. I think the whole thing with Libya is stupid now, too.

Wrong is wrong no matter who does it, though I am *hopeful* that my government knows a bit more about the situation in the Middle East and acted in our best interests on both occasions. Well, let's both hope together.

Your friend always,
Mrs. C/HEMom

PS. I think also each action of government ought be weighed on its own merits regardless of the perceived hypocrisy of the party doing the questioning. I think all of us have biases and etc. and that came out sooo clearly in this whole Wisconsin teacher thing. BOTH sides (union/Dems and Republicans) were out for a power grab and they used the children as human shields. Was disgusted with 'em both. I am sure plenty of great teachers, parents and students were caught up in fighting that didn't help anyone learn anything at all. :(

AMEN!!!!!! I only disagree with one thing -- those Fox Talking heads are not brainless, they are carefully orchestrating for their unthinking audiences. You should have seen the ditto-head letters to the editor in today's newspaper.

Those Fox "commentators" -- just like Rush LImbaugh-- know their audience and they cynically exploit them in order to build their ratings. It doesn't matter what Obama does, to them it's just red met to throw to their slavering followers.

The whole thing is very sad.
