Open Letter To My Cats

Dear Siren and Isadora,

You know I love you very much and I'm sure you love me too.

Yet sometimes love is not enough.

What a clusterf**k of a weekend you two handed me. I know it stinks to have health issues and that at times you're uncomfortable. It makes you difficult and grumpy; trust me, I get it.

Of course you'd feel better if you took the pain meds without gagging, shrieking, hissing, and flailing about with all claws extended. Just a suggestion.

Your vet and all his assistants are the best there is. Siren, you're like Norm from Cheers; everyone knows your name. Unfortunately it's followed by get the heavier gloves, maybe we need sedation and I think we need more people in here. You have made German Shepherds cry and Pit Bulls hide. Children think you're a bobcat.

Don't get too full of yourself Isadora; you're no picnic either. Knowing that you freak out in small carriers I got you one big enough for a large dog or 2 cats - god forbid you should just share with Siren. Of course not. The carrier weighs a ton Iza, and you're not exactly a tiny girl so thrusting yourself around like a crazed dancer doing a bizarre Merce Cunningham routine does not make it easy to transport you. Neither does sticking out your paw and digging your claws deep into my carrying hand. I do appreciate the pain though, it balances out the pain in my back and ankle.

You are always going to need meds. You will visit the vet once a month forever.

Let's work together eh?

No more hiding in the coils of the sofa.
No one is trying to kill you.
Wherever we are I will stay with you and I will always bring you home.

Can I get an Amen

This almost sounds like it could be a letter to my ailing husband.

Knock wood .. Rose hated going to the vet but she behaved .. once we got home I needed an exorcist to get her to relax/realize she was home Jack's only gone twice since he's with us and he was very Jack-like .. withdrawn and quiet I fear for the time I will have to take Harry .. on the ride home from the shelter it felt like I had a great dane in the carrier box a great dane kick boxer ... a shrieking howling great dane kick boxer ...

Hilarious!!! Dianne, you crack me up!

When I still had both my cats, one of them (Zoe) refused to go in a cat carrier. So if I needed to take her to the vet, she sat next to me in the car in the passenger seat, just like a human. Jerry on the other hand, would go into the carrier, but WHINE and CRY all the way to the vet. MEOW! MEOW! MEOW!

Great photos, Di! Siren has the most precious eyes!

X ya's!

Poor babies (you too). Miss Cassie has never been to the vet. She has a vet who makes house calls. MissMolly likes to go in the car and so I take her up to the vet. But not cassie, It is much nicer that way. I doubt Brenda would come all the way to New Jersey for a house call however.

Those two don't know how good they have it these days. I've never had a cat that liked to go to the vet (or a dog either for that matter). I've seen animals at the vet, so I think that they exist. But, it could have been a mirage. Maybe they were plants. Yeah, that's it. ;) Good luck on today's adventure whatever it may be. :)

Do you speak cat? You might have stood more of a chance if you could sweet talk them in their own language.

Good luck.

Well, this got my morning off to a great start!! I have to admit that it is considerably easier getting Sam Schnauzer to the vet -- well, at least until we walk in the door and he realizes where he is!! If he had more than a stump for a tail, believe me, he'd tuck it and run!! Give Siren and Isadora a chin scratch for Sam and I!!

Ha ha, this brings back so many memories of our 2 burmese cats. Think yourself lucky your two don't crap in the carrier and then walk in it.

Oh how I know this routine well.. just thankfully, not as often. I feel for you but clearly, none of those claws landed in your sense of humour. When they're nice and calm, please give them each a kiss on the head for me. And hugs to you, my friend.

I have several cats. No, I never intended to have several cats but you know how that goes. I find that Feliway is somewhat helpful in calming them when the carrier comes out. My vet recommends it. It seems to be helpful and if it doesn't work, it is not ridiculously expensive. The other thought that comes to mind when trying to dose cats that don't want to have anything to do with it is to have it compounded to a liquid form so it can be put in their food or fed through a syringe. They can even have their choice of flavors. It is more expensive but if possible, it does cut down on the ruckus over medications. All of my buddies hate pills so if it can be crushed, I put it in their food or get a liquid. I really don't want to be shredded as they fight like demons to get away. Good luck with your four footed companions.

Oh yeah...I get it.. They can use sedation, but I found it made the cat who needed it, more nuts if that was possible. Pills... Uggg.. My sister told me that there is some way they can be compounded into something edible...I know I have tried pill "sleeves".. I had one cat who had to have med and had a breakdown each and every time. Let me see what I can find out..but you are a brave women as this is so hard and hurtful and I mean as in blood loss..

Hi Dianne, I haven't been here in ages & then saw you over at Daryl's & realized, OMG Dianne lives in NJ.
I am so glad you are ok- just caught up here a bit & want you to know how much I love the way you write about your experiences-the story of Hope & your son at the gas station-WOW. I think you are blessed with two angels. & how is it possible that Hope is even more beautiful since my last visit-what a doll face!
& I feel for Siren & Isadora - I do, but I worry for you more. In case you haven't already, I suggest you read this letter out loud to them.
; ))

You are a story-teller! Wonderful. And having had a lot of cats down through the years, I can relate. Maybe we should get another one? Hmmm...

"Hey, Lois!"

No answer.

The vet wrote 'vicious' on my Siamese cat's chart. lol Actually, I could write a similar letter to my parents right now! Sigh.

While I'm more of a dog person, my last pet was a special cat I rescued and still think about him from time to time. He was very mellow.

P.S. Congratulations on earning the POTW! :)

We do not have cats at the moment but I remember it was always a battle royal if they needed to take medication.

Once a month forever? I would like to say that things will settle into a nice normal routine, but umm...you already know that would be false comfort. Good thing the little s**ts are worth it in the end.
Congrats on the POTW!

Oh my! I guess I was truly blessed with Sibu, he complained (loudly) all the way there, but, never bit or scratched anyone. I am sorry your babies have to go once a month, but, it sure is worth it in the long run to have such loving creatures in our lives.

Awww poor things (poor you too)... but they're so sweet (for those of us who don't have to handle them when it's Vet time.)

Oh, they can be terrorists! Hold your own!

Poor cats. We had to put Amber to sleep just before Thanksgiving.

But before that for a long time we were giving her pills every morning. Mrs. Jim crushed them pretty good and put them into her food.

With the loss of both Adi and Amber and so only Katrin around here now we get lonesome at times.
