The tech takes the carrier apart to get Siren out. As soon as the top comes off a giant towel goes over Siren and with super thick gloves on the tech wraps his arms along the length of Siren's body and secures him.
Outside in the waiting room I can hear people saying things like "wow! he's loud" or "what are they doing to that cat!?". One of the women at the desk will eventually tell everyone it's OK, it's just an extra difficult cat.
Siren will quiet down as long as he's entirely covered by the towel. The moment an inch of him is exposed the chorus begins - wide mouthed hiss, then deep in throat growl followed by shrieks that sound eerily like a child screaming No No from the bottom of a well.
4 legs become 12 and his claws would put Edward Scissorhands to shame.
Through this all, my hero, vet tech superman, never loses his cool. He tells the others that he likes Siren, respects his strength and will and "gets where he's coming from".
I think Siren likes him too. After yesterday's ordeal, as we put the carrier back together, Siren actually let the tech lift him off the table.
Progress has been made.

Yes, that's how both my cats were too. I think being covered must make them feel more secure and protected.

Oh, beautiful Siren.
My first cat behaved like that at the vet (and sometimes at home). I got her when I lived in Montreal and went through a few vets who visibly disliked her before moving to Ontario and finding the vet I've had for nearly 30 years now. When he handled Snag, he smiled at her spirit. He couldn't calm her down but he was never frazzled by her. When she passed away at 18, he told me that she was a feisty old girl .. his favourite kind of feline. Your vet is another rare gem.

The expression on Siren's face is marvelous. It tells me that no one is ever going to get the better of her Spirit.
What a marvelous cat. She takes life on her terms and woe unto those who forget that.

One of our cats was like this too. Poor Siren. Glad the vet was kind and understanding. :)
Siren is fierce, isn't he---and with such a beautiful angelic face. I love that the Tech understands Siren. That is more than half the battle, isn't it? Dear Dear Siren---His dignity stays in-tact because of that Vet Tech!
Oh, yeah. I've been there too. Nemesis hates the vet. She transforms from the mildest cat into a blurry ball of taloned fury when the cat carrier comes out. Heh!

oh Siren you are so aptly named ... i hope he got his claws clipped .. we made sure to get Harry clipped while we were there .. did i tell you once he'd gotten his temp taken - we needed a tech to help with that - he hopped off the exam table and snuggled with the vet's feet as she sat at her little 'desk' typing up all the notes that go into his file so anyone at the vet office who treats him knows all about him ... and his wild and crazy antics ...
so how is Siren?
Siren is handsome! It's so good that you have a tech who can handle him so well. A doc at the office we go has thrown his hands up in the air and said he just can't deal with our one dog. Pfft. So we worked it out.. we asked to see one of the other Vets there and I give him Reiki before he has to be seen and the combo has helped.
That vet tech is in the right place! He's perfect for his job. Siren is beautiful.

I have taken "difficult" cats to the vet, too. They do have to know they don't have a chance of escaping before they will settle down. I do believe your siren takes the cake though, as a champion difficult cat.
It's important to have the right person for the job. It's good to know that Siren is in such good hands. :)
