Mom's Day

mothering comes in all sizes and shapes and ages and genders
nurturing is something anyone with a pure heart and a good soul can do

all over the nation today priests and reverends and ministers will take advantage of this day to preach about the sanctity of marriage
they will be un-god like
they will criticize our President for finally listening to his heart and his children

shame on them

Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother.  ~Oprah Winfrey

All of us have moments in our lives that test our courage. Taking children into a house with a white carpet is one of them. ~ Erma Bombeck

To nourish children and raise them against odds is any time, any place, more valuable than to fix bolts in cars or design nuclear weapons. -- Marilyn French

Making the decision to have a child – it’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body .-Elizabeth Stone

Your kids require you most of all to love them for who they are, not to spend your whole time trying to correct them.  ― Bill Ayers

Well done Dianne. Such a beautiful variety and some things I had not thought of motherhood today. My husband had to raise his son alone after the boys mother abandoned them and I think we will make this a joint Mother's day for both of us.

Exactly! And I know that firsthand because of my own mother.

Superb post, Dianne, and like Jay, I do so agree with what everyone else has written! Thank you for the beautiful reminders of how many different mothers there are and that the world is blessed by each and every one! Hugs to you first today, Mom and Grandmom, and another big one to Hope!

Well, I'm not only pleased to get to say that I preached the sermon today, but I preached on celebrating families of all kinds, the families that are given to you and the families that you choose. I hope that your day is filled with love! (And I love your new blog theme! Pretty!)

Truly a Dianne post if I ever saw one; my favorite part was the elephants believe it or not but that's probably because I could never watch Dumbo without crying during "Baby Mine".

I hope you had a totally wonderful Mother's Day filled with nothing but Hope - and maybe some Son, too!

What a great post. You are so right, mothering is about nurturing after all, and anybody can be a nurturer.

Excellent post! Really made me appreciate my mom and all that she's done (and still does) for me.

Aw, what a lovely post, you've truly nailed what mothering is all about.

of all the reactions to the president's personal endorsement of gay marriage I found Bristol Palin's to be the best .. she said “So let me get this straight,” she writes. “It’s a problem if my mom listened too much to my dad, but it’s a heroic act if the President made a massive change in policy position that could affect the entire nation after consulting with his teenage daughters?”

Personally I think both Sasha and Malia are a lot smarter than either of Bristol's parents

Those are such great quotes and pictures. Love the Erma Bombeck one about the children on the white carpet. Now that does take courage.

Hi Dianne ~~ Lovely Mother's Day post. You had lots of nice quotes and all. I love how people include animals in the quotes. I hope your day was nice and that your son could spend some time with you.

Adi in the picture was ten, just about in her prime. Now she is 16 and showing her age badly. She gets a once-a-month shot and takes pills at bed time for her arthritis. And she has almost as many gray hairs as I do. She keeps her weight, right at 28 pounds, better than I do. Of course I have good control of what she eats, a control that I sure would not want someone to have over me.

A last, our preacher did not mention the President or sanctity of marriage. I expected him to but 'he also listens' to his congregation. Imagine, a Baptist minister doing that. He does rake us over the coals for drinking alcohol but I know over half of the congregation have wine and sometimes other quite occaisonally. We do, you have seen on my blog some of our meals and the drinks.

He preached on letting the past be and going on with the future. Also he is bringing THREE sermons on marriage. Part of our 'future' for this week was 'the couple that prays together gets along better.' For 21 days we are to pray together. Mrs. Jim decided that our regular mealtime prayer would be praying together for us. Guess we will have to say some bedtime "now I lay me's" for the days we don't eat together.

((((HUGS))) for Hope.
For you, Happy Mother's Day, late.

Now that I've read the other's comments, I will also say you don't have to be the birth mother to 'mother.' I've seen it too in our own family.

KP's daddy is a stay at home Dad for her and BP. My youngest son did the 'mothering' in their home and also worked out of the home doing longshore, boatman, work. After the divorce the kids stayed with him.
