Surprise !!
My son Jeffrey will be 40 next week, to be sure of surprising him my daughter-in-law threw a surprise party for him this past Saturday at my brother's house in Brooklyn. Jeffrey thought he was going there to celebrate my niece's engagement.
A few of the party goers practice hiding in the corner. My baby bro shows us how hot the sun is when "be there in 10 minutes" turns into more than a half hour
Finally, from the other side of the house, birthday boy and his best girl arrive.
Lots of hugging
Lots of laughter from his friends
Once she got over the shock of a crowd of people yelling surprise at her and Daddy, Hope had a great time with her friends
Corn-on-the-cob was a big hit
Until cake came along. Dad got the first slice and then there was some discussion about who got the corner flowers. Hope wasn't happy for a moment but then everyone shared.
A toast to the birthday boy
Me and my sweeties
Happy Birthday to a good son, a good Dad, and a good guy

At The Lake
You can sit on our bench, just push all the fishing stuff over - the little boy tells me
I thank him and sit and watch them for a bit.
My name is Robert
Nice to meet you Robert, I'm Dianne
He points toward the older gentleman - That's Grandpa
Grandpa nods and smiles
I know a lot about fishing, Grandpa teaches me things
You're lucky. I bet he's a good teacher.
He is but we never catch anything. It's just a thing to do while we talk.
I ask what they talk about
All the important things
I thank him and sit and watch them for a bit.

Jonathan Winters
We've lost a giant of comedy. A master of improvisation.
On the Jack Parr show Jonathan was given a stick and within seconds he had created 10 characters.
He became known to my son's generation through his work on 'Mork and Mindy' and his voice work on 'The Smurfs'
There wasn't an emotion he couldn't convey.
I was in the kitchen washing dishes and listening to my son's laughter fill the house. He was about 7 and was having a rough time - his father hadn't called him in weeks and he had just been told he needed to wear glasses.
The sound of his laughter was so good to hear.
"You watching Mork and Mindy?"
"Yea Ma"
"Mork always makes you laugh"
"It's the chubby guy Ma, he's so funny. I want to hug him"
Thank You Jonathan

The Three Tenors
These guys are often in the tree right behind the house.
My granddaughter Hope says good morning to them from her bedroom window as she gets ready for school. My bedroom is right below hers and I can hear her.
One day I was helping her get dressed and I called the birds the three tenors. Hope is interested in opera so I explained a bit about the three tenors and we listened to a recording of their Central Park concert.
Days later I heard Hope saying good morning to them and then I heard her Mom asking her to please hurry and put her shoes on.
"I'm talking to the three tenors" Hope replies.
"Where did you learn about the three tenors?" Mom asks.
Hope's answer had me smiling all morning - "From the CD Nana played for me, we do more than just princess you know".

Growing Up
I think I posted a pic of this Santa a couple of years ago. He stands on my neighbor's porch. I call him Drug Dealer Santa since he really reminds me of a drug dealer in Brooklyn who would dress as Santa to handle the holiday pot rush and confuse the police.
But I digress.
My neighbor's porch faces the front of our house. I'll never forget how excited Hope was on her 2nd Christmas to see him there. She stood at the window forever just gazing at him. We always said good morning and good night to him. We waved as we passed him in the car and we'd often walk over to see him.
Fast forward to the ripe old age of 3 1/2.
I've been waving and greeting the old guy as always. Hope hasn't said much. Finally the other night she looked at me with all the sweet, patient kindness she possesses and said ...
"Oh Nana, he's not real. Didn't anyone tell you?"
She does believe in THE Santa.

The Princess Diaries - Nana Edition
Hope knows I'm not that fond of princess stuff. I'll play for awhile even though I always have to be the evil queen, the evil stepmother, the evil whatever.
"You do a really good evil voice Nana"
One day Hope decided I could be the princess. "It's fair Nana, you can do it"
"Do you know how to be a princess?"
Good question.
I didn't last long in the role of princess. I was actually better as Prince Charming.
Poses another question.
I forgot to take the tiny little tiara out of my morning mess hair. I went to the mailbox not knowing it was nested up there.
Adds to the questions my neighbors have.
One of Hope's favorite things about me - I think, I hope - is that I can put a creative spin on just about anything.
Thus the un-princess came to be.
She looks at the world from different angles.
She really enjoys her food and has good body image.
She thinks it is hilarious to show the camera what she's chewing but does know it's not "nice manners".
She really doesn't understand why a perfectly good PJ sleeve can't be multi-purpose.
She thinks big hair is only for costumes.
She loves all thebackyard forest creatures.
She thinks it's necessary for a princess to be political ...
Hope, there's no cheating in Candyland
What?
You went 4 yellow spaces, not 2.
Are you sure?
I am.
You don't have your glasses on.
I can see colors.
Let's watch TV now.

Being a Person
"it's so hard to just be a person, a good person" my Nana would tell me, "don't make it too complicated, just keep an open heart".
Yesterday was my birthday and I was in a mood. The mood of all moods.
Too many things up in the air; money issues, family drama, worry and stress.
I was determined to be grateful and open hearted. I fed the birds and squirrels. It was a cloudy and misty morning and I love that. Sunny days are so freakin' perky.
I brought coffee and doughnuts to "the old guys" at the marina. They were talking about Pearl Harbor and wars. "It's a sad day" one of them tells me. "It's my birthday" I respond without thinking, I had been hell bent on ignoring that fact. "It's your birthday!" he shouts out, a smile enhancing every beautiful line on his wonderful face. "Hey! you divas, it's the gal's birthday". They all know my name but prefer to call me gal, girlie, sweetie, sweetheart, and so on, Oh yeah, and kid. "It's the kid's birthday?" another repeats, "well that calls for the silver flask".
We all had spiked coffee and sang bits and pieces of old songs while the gulls fled to open water.
I got home and had a two hour fun talk with my baby brother. Right before we hung up he told me to check his Facebook.
He wrote this :
happy birthday to my big sister Dianne who took me in as a teenager
when living with my father became unbearable. if not for her my life
today would be different. we don't talk or see each other often but it
doesn't change that fact. remember where you came from and how you got
where you are today. no doubt someone helped you along the way.

In the evening Hope gave me a brownie she made in 'Kindegarden Cafe' cooking class and we played with the Ballerina Barbie I gave her for the first night of Chanukah. She'll be in Brooklyn tonight so we celebrated early.
"I get a Chanukah present because your Nana is Jewish?"
"Well sort of, you really get it just because I love you and my Nana would have loved you too"
"That's a good reason"
Have a good weekend everyone
Just be a person
