A Scene From The West Wing

Not the real West Wing, trust me - if I was making a scene in the real West Wing you would have all heard about it by now.

This is one of my favorite scenes from what I consider one of the best TV shows ever made - 'The West Wing'

Leo - the chief of staff - is speaking to his deputy Josh.
Josh is having a very hard time and is resisting help.

Leo tells him this little story.

A man falls into a hole. It is deep and he can't get out.
A doctor walks by and the man shouts up to him
"Doctor, I have fallen down here and can't get out. Please help"
The doctor scribbles a prescription, tosses it down and moves on.

A priest walks by. The man once again shouts out - "Father, I need help getting out of here"
The priest says a prayer and moves on.

Next one of the man's friends walks by.
The man calls out - "Joe! I have fallen into this deep hole and can't get out"
Joe jumps down into the hole.
The man is incredulous - "Why would you jump in? Now we're both stuck down here"
Joe pats his friend on the back - "It's OK" he tells him, "I've been here before and I know the way out."

And on we go ...

That was an uplifting fable Dianne. I wish someone would walk by and throw a prescription pad at me right about now though…..

The thing about holes when you think of it is that if you carefully dig out the sides the dirt falling beneath you lifts you to the ground again.

I am of a mind that if the President has at least studied some of Julius Ceaser that there may be a way to end this finally.

It is always a terrible cost and I know that most progressives are not in favor of the hole but I am also of a mind that we not repeat the past and leave the job undone unless we are willing to absolutely and finally seal our borders and make anything coming have a complete eyes on inspection right down to opening every single box in every single container coming in every single port there is no other way to end this.

Lovely parable, Dianne. I never watched "The West Wing" much but I know it was a highly acclaimed show. So, are we talking collective hole or your own personal pit??

I can only hope that Joe does know the way out.
Interesting comment from walking man about holes. I can only hope that in these last three months Obama has been studying how to chip away at the sides and build that ramp out.

Hugs to you from Ohio,

Like Lisa said, great parable. Why can't people in real life be as smart as the ones on tv? LOL

Glad to have heard this, I never watched the show, only because there was usually a time conflict with something I was more committed to watching.

A fine quote.. but it's the photo that touches me more deeply. That little finger-grasper!

What a lovely story--and so true. And I howled over "Siren's" recounting of your Thanksgiving. If our Empress had been able, she would have had similar comments about our Infiltrator (now in college) and the subsequent Invaders who probably prolonged her life.

Thanks for your visits to my blog and the kind words you left.
