My Friend Bobbie

Bobbie died Saturday. Her youngest daughter Kitty has posted about her Mom at BOBBIE’S PLACE - ALMOST THERE

I went back almost three years and found Bobbie’s first visit to my blog. In part she commented …

Hello, Diane. Thank you for visiting my blog. I can use all the friends i can get. I love some of the elements in your layout. Could I steal one or two? I like the way you think.

I love the way Bobbie thought.

She was a friend of nature. A friend of human rights. A friend of open and progressive thought.

She was my friend.

I got to meet Bobbie this past Friday. She was all her blog persona suggested and more.

We talked about our children. Her children were there and I was honored to meet them. You could feel so much of Bobbie in them; welcoming, comforting, genuine, kind.

We talked about our mutual blog friends. She loved us all.

I know that I have posted this poem before but it feels to me that it was written for Bobbie …

I am standing by the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength,
and I stand and watch
until at last she hangs like a peck of white cloud
just where the sun and sky come down to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says, 'There she goes!
Gone where? Gone from my sight - that is all.

She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side
and just as able to bear her load of living freight
to the places of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone at my side says,
'There she goes! ' ,
there are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout :
'Here she comes!'

Right before my Nana died she told me that she was “ready to go” and that my Grandfather was waiting for her.

I have always thought of Bobbie and her husband Ralph as one of the great love stories.

I believe he is at the head of that chorus gladly shouting “Here She Comes”

Peaceful Journey Bobbie

I will miss you.

I'm so glad you got to meet Bobbie! I would have loved to have met her. She was one of my first serious blogging friends and visited my blog almost everyday. I think Ralph is waiting for her with a really big smile! I will miss her.

A lovely post and tribute to her!

I am so sorry for your friend's passing. I love the poem you posted. I hold to this when I think about passing. I used it for part of my mother's tribute 15 and 1/2 years ago.

Something has spoken to me in the night,
Burning the tapers of the waning year;
Something has spoken in the night,
And told me I shall die, I know not where.

Saying:
"To lose the earth you know, for greater knowing;
To lose the life you have, for greater life;
To leave the friends you loved, for greater loving;
To find a land more kind than home, more large than earth-

"Whereon the pillars of this earth are founded,
Toward which the conscience of the world is tending-
A wind is rising, and the rivers flow."

That's a lovely poem, Dianne. Although I never had the honour of meeting Bobbie in person, I feel she touched all who knew her via her blog. I will miss her so much. A truly wonderful human being.

You have taken up Bobbie's causes because they are your causes too Dianne...I wish I was more like Bobbie, but I can be difficult and unforgiving...maybe there is a lesson for me to learn....

I was so saddened to learn of her death. I haven't had time to visit everyone's blog lately, and even when I do, I can't always comment. I hope she knew I still read her posts, even when I didn't say anything.

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, she sounds as if she was a wonderful woman and that she'll be just as happy on the other side with her beloved Ralph.

Even though she is gone from this earthly plane, her spirit will live on in not just her children and grandchildren but in the words and posts of her blog which is where I'm going right now to leave my condolences.

My thoughts have been with Bobbie these last two days. I am really going to miss that lady. Feeling sad but with lots of loving thoughts. I understand that Kitty and her family are moving to New England. I'd like to welcome them one day. That too makes me feel better.

Bye Di. I'm leaving for Santa Barbara tomorrow to be with the girls. See you in July!

Such a beautiful tribute for such a special person....How truly wonderful that you got to be with her just before she left on her journey....I love the poem and what it says and in turn, what you said, my dear Dianne. A very very Beautiful Post, as always.
I wrote a song some 55 years ago after someone I knew and cared about had died..It was called "Gone", and part of the lyric was..."....gone from my side and he's gone from my sight and no more, is he....". I do dearly love the idea that wherever he went people were waiting for his arrival with great anticipation and with a very very warm welcome...!

I am feeling very weird right now. I used to talk to Bobbie via her blog and sometimes via email. I haven't been in touch with her lately - I feel like I have lost a dear friend, but if she was so dear then why wasn't I in touch with her recently - I am feeling very sad. Thank you for this post Dianne.
